Mother in ECU Opera's Fall 2020 Production of Hansel and Gretel

 

Kate Kasmier McElveen, an Atlanta native, has recently completed a Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy (the study of teaching voice lessons) and Performance (the study of singing opera) at East Carolina University under the direction of Mrs. Nicole Franklin and Dr. Jami Rhodes. During her time in graduate school she sang the role of Mother in ECU Opera’s production of Hansel and Gretel, taught the Beginning Group Voice seminar, served as music director at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Rocky Mount, NC, and served as assistant to the director for the ECU University Choir.

She received her Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from Mercer University, with a minor in Communication Studies. During her time between schooling, she sang with the Atlanta Opera Chorus in Puccini’s La Boheme and Turandot. She is an enthusiastic voice instructor who has taught at various churches and studios throughout Metro Atlanta. Having years of experience introducing children to music with the Music for Little Mozarts program, Kate enjoys teaching students of all ages.



During her time at the Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts at Pebblebrook High School, she participated in numerous GMEA All State Honor Choirs, and has since used her experience as a GMEA/NAfME professional member to write and implement a preparation course for the first All State Audition. She attended the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program as a vocalist, was a member of the inaugural season of the Atlanta Opera’s High School Opera Institute and studied abroad in the Oberlin in Italy summer program. Kate is honored to have the opportunity to share her love and passion for music with others, and to help people find their own musical path.
